ISO 9001:2026 Now in Use in Over 160 Countries
On September 16, 2026, the revised edition of the international standard on Quality Management Systems – Requirements, ISO 9001:2026, was published and released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Although no drastic changes to requirements are specified in the 2026 edition, the standard adopted some editorial revisions, along with certain choices of words. In addition, key terminologies dealing with quality management now appear in section 3. Annex A has been revised and expanded with more explanatory notes and illustrations, facilitating understanding of the requirements of the standard, from clause 4 to clause 10, with less difficulty.
The revisions to ISO 9001 ultimately strengthen its relevance and role as a whole-of-organization framework to help management realize the strategic goals of their organizations while addressing a more challenging business environment brought about by climate change, trade disputes, supply disruptions, energy supply, evolving geopolitical patterns, natural disasters and a host of other crises.
ISO 9001:2026 reminds organizations to keep an eye on climate change and address its impacts on both their organizations and interested parties. Identifying risks and the actions to address these continues to be a requirement, but the 2026 edition reminds that opportunities should also be identified and addressed in their own right in order to avoid organizations missing out on the beneficial effects of these opportunities. The revised edition likewise highlights the importance of leadership cultivating a quality culture that sustains ethical behaviour across their organizations.
One other area that ISO 9001:2026 highlighted in its revisions is change. Where changes are introduced in the organization or in its quality management system, the standard reminds about monitoring of the progress of these changes, assessing them and determining whether the intended results of such changes are achieved.
